August 21 – Day Trip to Elk Horn, Iowa
Here’s an exciting way to spend a summer day visiting a city that cherishes its Nordic heritage. The Norden Club’s second day trip for 2026 has been scheduled for August 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Elk Horn, Iowa. The visit will focus on Denmark, our featured country this year.
Henry Olson, the Administrative and Visitor Experience Manager at the Museum of Danish America at Elk Horn. has arranged a wonderful day, beginning with an Executive Director’s welcome and private vault tours and kaffe og kringle served on Danish China. An historic home called Bedstemor’s House would be opened to us. In addition to the Museum, the troll, Bedstemor’s House and the Genealogy and Education Center, Elk Horn also has a Danish Windmill, which will be open to us.
Lunch would be at The Norse Horse with a light option of smorrebrod and cucumber salad with Danish apple cake for dessert for $15.00 per person. The sandwich toppings will be Havarti cheese, egg salad, rollepolse, and another Danish option like smoked salmon or Danish dried beef. There is also the possibility of frikadiller.
It is about a two-hour drive and we will carpool again. Everyone chipped in to reimburse the drivers on our trip to Blair. The cost for the museum entrances, etc. and for the meal will be $30, plus gas money for the volunteer drivers.
